Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine

Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a serious viral infection that affects the central nervous system. It is most common in rural and wetland areas across Asia, particularly during hot and rainy seasons. The disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. The primary sources of the virus are pigs and waterfowl, but it cannot be transmitted directly from these animals to humans.

In most cases, infection causes no symptoms or only mild ones. However, in rare instances, it can progress to severe encephalitis, leading to high fever, headache, confusion, coma, seizures, and sometimes irreversible brain damage. There is no specific antiviral treatment for the disease.

Who should consider vaccination?

Vaccination is recommended for travelers planning to spend one month or longer in rural or endemic areas of Asia, especially during summer and autumn. Short-term travelers may also be at risk if they plan to sleep in unscreened accommodations, attend outdoor events, or visit wetland areas.

About the vaccine

The Japanese Encephalitis vaccine is safe, effective, and provides significant protection. It is given in two doses, one month apart. It is recommended to start the vaccination series at least six weeks before departure. In some cases, a third booster dose may be required after two years to renew protection.
