Chickenpox (Varicella) is a highly contagious viral illness caused by the Varicella-zoster virus, part of the herpes family. It is most common in children but can also occur in adults, where it often takes a more severe course.
The virus spreads through direct contact with the rash blisters or via airborne droplets from an infected person.
The disease presents as a red rash that develops into itchy lesions and is sometimes accompanied by fever, headache, and loss of appetite. Although often considered a “mild” disease, chickenpox can lead to complications such as bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, and – in pregnant women – risks to the fetus.
After recovery, the virus remains dormant in the body and may later reactivate as shingles (Herpes zoster).
The vaccine
The chickenpox vaccine is a live-attenuated vaccine given in two doses. It is recommended for anyone who has never had the disease and has not been vaccinated before.
It offers high protection against symptomatic illness and severe disease, and also helps reduce the spread of the virus in the community, protecting high-risk populations.
Who should be vaccinated?
- Adults and adolescents who have never had chickenpox and have not been vaccinated, especially before traveling to areas where the disease is common
- Healthcare, education, and care facility workers
- Women planning pregnancy, to protect themselves and their baby
- Anyone in frequent contact with people at high risk, such as immunocompromised individuals
