Yellow Fever Vaccine

Yellow Fever Vaccine

About the disease

Yellow Fever is a serious, potentially fatal viral illness found mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and South America. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito and can also infect monkeys.
In most cases, infected individuals experience only mild symptoms, but in some, the disease can progress to cause jaundice, bleeding, organ failure, and even death. Since there is no specific treatment for Yellow Fever, vaccination is the most effective means of protection.

Who should get vaccinated?

The vaccine is recommended – and in some cases required – for anyone planning to travel or stay for an extended period in countries where the disease is present. Many countries in Africa and South America will not allow entry without proof of vaccination, so it is important to get vaccinated in advance and keep the certificate in an easily accessible place.

How the vaccine is given

The vaccine, containing live attenuated virus, is approved for individuals aged 9 months and older. It provides long-term protection, but does not prevent infection entirely. Therefore, mosquito bite prevention measures remain essential during travel.

When to get vaccinated

It is recommended to receive the vaccine at least 10 days before entering a country that requires it, to ensure it takes effect in time.
