TDaP Vaccine

TDaP Vaccine

The TDaP combined vaccine provides vital protection against three serious infectious diseases – tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) – which can cause severe complications and even be life-threatening.
While part of Israel’s routine childhood immunization program, it’s important to know that in adulthood, a booster dose is recommended every 10 years.

Tetanus
A potentially fatal bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani, found in soil, dust, and metal objects. The bacteria enter the body through cuts or open wounds – even very small ones. Symptoms usually appear about 10 days after exposure and include painful muscle spasms, neck and jaw stiffness, and sometimes paralysis. Without treatment, the mortality rate can reach around 40%.

Diphtheria
A bacterial disease that mainly affects the respiratory tract. Symptoms include weakness, mild fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes. The bacteria produce a powerful toxin that can form a thick coating in the throat and nose, making it difficult to breathe or swallow, and can cause damage to the heart, nervous system, and kidneys.

Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
A highly contagious respiratory infection caused by Bordetella pertussis. It is characterized by severe, prolonged coughing fits that can be life-threatening, especially in infants and the elderly. Symptoms may also include eye hemorrhages, convulsions, and encephalitis.

Who should get vaccinated?

  • Adults who have not been vaccinated in recent years – a booster is recommended every 10 years.
  • Pregnant women – recommended between weeks 27–36 of pregnancy to pass protective antibodies against pertussis to the baby, safeguarding them during their first months of life.
  • Travelers, healthcare workers, and anyone in contact with infants.
