Hepatitis B Vaccine

Hepatitis B Vaccine

What is Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a serious infectious disease that affects the liver and is found in nearly every part of the world. It is transmitted through blood, bodily fluids, sexual contact, or the use of contaminated medical/personal equipment. Infection can also occur unexpectedly, for example by sharing a razor, needle, or toothbrush with an infected person.

Symptoms may include:

  • Fever, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting
  • Abdominal and joint pain
  • Dark urine and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

In some cases, the infection becomes chronic, leading to long-term complications such as cirrhosis (liver scarring) or liver cancer.

Why get vaccinated before traveling?
Travelers to countries in Asia, Africa, South America, and the Caribbean – especially those traveling for medical treatment, long-term stays, or sex tourism – are at higher risk of infection.

The Hepatitis B vaccine is safe, effective, and has been part of Israel’s routine immunization program since 1992.

It is given in three doses:

  • First dose on the day of vaccination
  • Second dose one month later
  • Third booster dose five months after the second
This provides long-term protection of about 90%.
