Traveling to Europe or Asia?
There’s a vaccine you may want to know about.
About the disease
Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral illness that can be dangerous. It is mainly transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected tick, or by consuming unpasteurized dairy products from infected goats or cows.
It is found in certain regions of Europe and Asia, especially in forested and open areas, during the spring, summer, and autumn months (April–November).
Not every trip to Europe or Asia requires vaccination, and not every outdoor activity poses a risk — it’s important to assess the level of exposure based on your exact destination.
Symptoms
Most infected individuals develop no symptoms at all. When illness occurs, it may begin with a flu-like phase, including fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. In some patients, the disease progresses to a second phase where the virus affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), causing confusion, neck stiffness, and sometimes permanent neurological damage.
In rare cases, the illness can be fatal.
How to protect yourself
The TBE vaccine can be given from age one. It is administered in a series of three doses and is highly effective — with about 95% success in preventing the disease.
It is recommended mainly for travelers who will be spending time outdoors or working in areas where TBE is known to exist, such as parts of Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Baltic states, and certain regions of northeastern Asia.
In addition to vaccination, personal protection measures include:
- Wearing long, light-colored clothing when in nature
- Applying insect repellent to exposed skin and clothing
- Checking your body and clothes daily for ticks and removing them promptly
- Avoiding direct sitting on grass or unclean ground
- Consuming only pasteurized dairy products
