What is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is an infectious disease that affects the liver, caused by the Hepatitis A virus. Infection usually occurs through consumption of contaminated food or water, or by direct contact with an infected person – even if they show no visible symptoms.
The disease is common in regions with poor sanitation infrastructure, especially in Africa, Asia, and South America. However, outbreaks are also occasionally reported in Europe and Israel, often following contact with a patient returning from a high-risk area or from contaminated food.
Hepatitis A – Symptoms
The illness typically lasts several weeks but can sometimes persist for months. Symptoms may include:
- Severe fatigue
- Fever
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of appetite
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Dark urine and pale stools
In most cases, Hepatitis A is a temporary illness, but in rare instances it can cause severe liver damage. Even with full recovery, it can disrupt travel plans and significantly affect quality of life.
