Meningitis Vaccine

Meningitis Vaccine

What is Meningitis?
Meningitis is a serious illness, most often caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus). It is a severe infection that develops rapidly, potentially damaging the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and in some cases entering the bloodstream – a life-threatening condition.

Why is vaccination important?
Complications of meningitis can cause irreversible damage, including hearing loss, neurological injury, epilepsy, paralysis, developmental delays, learning difficulties, and even death.
Although the disease can be treated with antibiotics, early detection is challenging, making prevention through vaccination the safest and most effective way to protect your health.

Who should get the MenACWY meningitis vaccine?
This vaccine is not required for all travelers to Africa or Asia, but is especially recommended for those at higher risk:

  • Travelers to specific high-risk regions – particularly those staying in the “Meningitis Belt” of sub-Saharan Africa, where the disease is highly prevalent during the dry season (December–June). Crowding, poor sanitation, and certain climate conditions contribute to large-scale outbreaks.
  • Pilgrims traveling for Hajj or Umrah – Saudi Arabia requires proof of vaccination as a condition for entry for pilgrims, due to the risk of infection in crowded gatherings.
  • Young adults before military service – In Israel, the vaccine is routinely given in the IDF due to shared living conditions that increase outbreak risk.

The vaccine
The meningitis vaccine is given as a single dose. If the risk continues, a booster dose is recommended every five years to maintain protection.
