Rabies Vaccine

Rabies Vaccine

Why vaccinate before your trip?

Despite major advances in medicine and technology, rabies remains one of the deadliest diseases in the world. It is prevalent mainly in Asia, Africa, and Central and South America, posing a risk every year to thousands of travelers, residents, and field workers.

Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals – most often via bites or scratches – and, in rare cases, through contact with mucous membranes. The virus attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), and without timely treatment, the disease is almost always fatal.

How can you protect yourself?
The most effective protection for at-risk travelers is preventive rabies vaccination, administered before potential exposure.

The vaccine is especially recommended for:

  • Travelers staying for extended periods in areas where rabies is common
  • Field workers or volunteers, especially in roles involving contact with animals
  • Travelers whose itineraries involve potential encounters with stray animals – such as children, animal lovers, or those staying in villages and rural areas

How the vaccine works
The rabies vaccine is an active vaccine that stimulates the body to produce antibodies against the rabies virus, reducing the risk of disease if exposure occurs. It is given in two doses – on day 0 and day 7 – and provides protection for about three years.
For those who remain at risk after three years, a booster dose is recommended.

Important to know: Even after preventive vaccination, in the event of a bite or scratch you must seek additional medical treatment, which includes extra vaccine doses and, in some cases, rabies immunoglobulin.

What to do if exposed

  • Wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes, and apply an appropriate disinfectant (such as povidone-iodine)
  • Seek medical care immediately, even if previously vaccinated
  • Prompt treatment dramatically reduces the risk of disease development
