What is Typhoid Fever and why is vaccination important?
Typhoid Fever is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. It spreads mainly in areas with poor sanitation, such as contaminated water or food stored or prepared in non-sterile conditions.
Infection usually occurs through exposure to contaminated food or water, via direct or indirect contact with the feces of infected individuals.
The disease is especially common in countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, as well as parts of Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
Symptoms of Typhoid Fever
The illness can develop within a few days after exposure and may cause symptoms such as:
- High and persistent fever
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Headache and abdominal pain
- Weakness and general fatigue
- Dry cough
- Loss of appetite
- Skin rash
Although Typhoid Fever is considered very rare in Israel, a few isolated cases are reported each year – almost all due to exposure during travel abroad.

The Typhoid Fever vaccine is recommended for anyone traveling to areas where the disease is present and is available for individuals aged two and older.
It is given as a single dose, at least two weeks before departure. The vaccine is about 75% effective and should be renewed every three years for those who continue to travel to high-risk regions.
